Description: Human trafficking is a rapidly increasing public health and safety issue in the United States. It is the fastest rising commerce globally, with over 200,000 minors at risk in the United States. People are forced into labor or sexual exploitation with deception and intimidation. It is reported that up to 80% of victims are seen by a healthcare provider while captive. Often, victims will not identify themselves as such due to the fear of being further abused by their captor. Dental care providers are perfectly positioned to identify the signs and report suspected human trafficking. By educating dental clinicians, victims of trafficking may be more likely to be rescued and receive the appropriate resources for recovery. This course will define types of trafficking, differentiate between sex trafficking and sex work, identify at-risk populations, describe how to identify and report trafficked patients, and discuss trauma-informed care.

This course is approved by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission in accordance with House Bill 2059, 86th Session, 2019.

Objectives - Upon completion of this course, participants will:

  • Understand the definition of Human Trafficking;
  • Learn how to identify a person who is being trafficked;
  • Learn the principles of trauma-informed care and how to communicate with a potentially trafficked person;
  • Understand the procedures for reporting a potentially trafficked person.

Description: Far too many hygienists are using the same instruments and equipment they were taught with during dental hygiene school. Many of these are outdated and pose serious harm to the patient and the clinician. Why? Whatever the reason, using outdated instruments and equipment increases the opportunity for an uncomfortable dental experience and compromises treatment outcomes. Over the past decade, the dental hygiene instrumentation market has exploded with new, innovative designs that change how we deliver care. This course will examine new hand instruments along with ultrasonic units and tips from various manufacturers, giving participants a chance to compare and contrast like products. A brief discussion on the benefits of incorporating laser units and air polishing devices into the dental hygiene visit will be had. Ergonomic benefits, advanced treatment options, and conservation of tooth structure will be discussed. Hygienists will also learn cost-effective methods of creating hygiene packets that require fewer instruments. Taking this course will make providing advanced periodontal care more comfortable and safer than ever.

Objectives - Upon completion of this course, participants will:

  • Identify the objectives of periodontal debridement;
  • Review fundamental skills of manual and ultrasonic periodontal instrumentation;
  • Describe innovative periodontal instrument design features that support ergonomic health and impact the delivery of dental hygiene therapy;
  • Discuss the benefits of adapting laser and air polishing therapies into the hygiene visit to effectively treat patients with various levels of disease;
  • Explain how to select instruments to increase efficiency and productivity for the office while facilitating successful treatment outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Human Trafficking Course qualify as Human Trafficking Training in Texas and Michigan?

  • Yes, this Human Trafficking course qualifies for Texas and Michigan's Human Trafficking Training requirement. The speaker, Kandice Swarthout (Inspired Education and Wellness, LLC), is an approved provider.

Do these CEs meet the requirements for my state?

  • Today's RDH is an ADA CERP and AGD PACE provider, both of which are recognized by all 50 states (including California). According to AGD's guidelines, live, interactive, and streaming events are considered a live CE as long as Q & A is offered at the end of each course. This event will be streamed live by Today's RDH, and the speakers will be available for Q & A after their presentation. All CE certificates issued will state this is a live event.

    Your state's Dental Practice Act, which can be found on your state's Board of Dentistry/Board of Dental Examiners website, includes your allowable duties, CE requirements, and the rules pertaining to your state, etc. We highly encourage all dental healthcare professionals to check their state's Dental Practice Act often as rules, regulations, and CE requirements can change.

How do I get my certificate/proof of completion? Will it be emailed?

  • You will receive your CE Certificate of Completion via email within 7 days after the event concludes. It is very important that you use the same email address to log in to each individual course as you use to register for the event. If you use different emails, there is no way to verify your attendance with your purchase. Please note, you must be logged on to each course for at least one hour and 40 minutes per AGD PACE guidelines to receive CE credit.

    We do recommend you create a SimpleCert account, which you will receive instructions on when the certificates are sent out. Once your attendance is verified, your CE certificates will be there, as well as emailed. If you do not receive your CE certificates or only receive some of them, CHECK YOUR SPAM BOX. Again, please give us 7 days to verify attendance before reaching out to support.

Are these CE courses considered "live" or "in-classroom?"

  • Yes, these courses are considered "live" and "in-classroom" and are recognized as such by AGD PACE because the presenters are presenting live (not pre-recorded) and will be available to answer questions from participants during and after their course presentation (i.e., "interacting with the presenter"). The certificate of completion (CE certificate) will state it was a live course.

    Note for Tennessee: These courses count for CE, but are considered web-based, and not in-person.

Are these courses considered "clinical" or "core" classes?

  • To figure out if the courses are clinical or core, you need to check your specific state's Dental Practice Act, which gives the requirements and what is accepted.

Is this going to be offered any other days besides the day listed?

  • This event (courses/speaker lineup) will be live-streamed during the scheduled date and times only. There are no plans for it to be available for replay, self-study, or on-demand.

When is your next live, virtual event going to be?

  • We plan each live, virtual CE event one at a time. Right now, we aren't organizing and planning our next event, so we don't know. However, if you'd like to be the first to know when we announce our next event, you can sign-up for our email list by going to todaysrdh.com and sign up in the box that says, "Get Today's RDH Sent Directly to Your Inbox." We also offer self-study (not “live”) CE courses which can be found here: https://dentalce.todaysrdh.com/

When will I receive an email with links to each course to log on?

  • Once you register for the event, you will receive an email with instructions on how to get your links for each course. Be sure to check your SPAM folder. In order to properly track attendance for the event, each attendee will have unique links to log in to each course: one link per course, for a total of four links. Do not share your links with anybody, or you will not receive your CE Certificates of Completion for attending. If you share, and more than one person is logged on using your link, the tracking software to verify how long you were in attendance for each course won't work correctly.

What is the latest to sign-up?

  • The latest to sign-up is an hour before the event or when it sells out.

Are there breaks?

  • Yes, there will be 15-minute breaks between each course.

Do I have to sit and watch the whole thing?

  • Just like if you went to a dental conference and took CE courses, yes, it would be in your best interest to pay attention the whole time. If there are certain courses you don't want credit for, you can step away at those times. There will be breaks in between the courses and a lunch break. Please keep in mind, you must be logged in to each two-hour course for a minimum of one hour and 40 minutes per AGD PACE guidelines to receive CE credit. The webinar software tracks your time in the event, and there will be no exceptions made to those who do not attend for the minimum amount of time.

What if I only want a couple of the courses being offered?

  • These courses are being sold as a package. If you prefer not to watch or take a certain course offered, you are free to step away during that time and come back for other courses during the day.

Will these courses be recorded and offered later?

  • Because this is a live event, it can only be watched at the time listed.

Are there test questions at the end of each course?

  • Unless your state requires a quiz/assessment to be taken at the completion of live CE courses, there will not be a quiz. For those states that do require a quiz, quizzes for each course will be made available.

Are there refunds?

  • Full refunds (minus Eventbrite fees) will be available through March 18, 2022. Starting March 19, 2022, no refunds will be offered. Please make sure you can attend before purchasing and that you have a strong internet connection.

Are these courses only for hygienists, or can doctors and dental assistants receive CE too?

  • These courses can be taken by doctors, hygienists, and dental assistants for CE credit.

Can Canadians receive CE credit for these courses?

  • Canada recognizes CE Courses that have AGD PACE approved providers, so yes. However, we cannot guarantee, so we always recommend checking with your governing agency to confirm approval.

Can we sign-up as a group, or does everyone need to sign-up separately?

  • Each person who wants to receive CE credit needs to register and login into each course individually. This is because CE certificates are awarded based on comparing who purchased tickets and how long that person attended each course.

Is there a cap on the number of attendees?

  • There is a cap of 5,000 attendees.

What is the processing fee for?

  • The processing fee is an Eventbrite fee they charge for using their software.

Do I have to watch this on a laptop?

  • You can watch from any device with an internet connection or data, including laptops, desktops, tablets, or your smartphone.

What happens if I get disconnected?

  • Click on the course link again and log back in on the same device with the same name and email. If you get disconnected again, try using a different device like a cell phone, but please make sure you are using the same name and email to log in.

Are these CEs reported to CE Broker or CE Zoom?

  • Not directly. Just like an in-person conference, the certificate needs to be manually submitted to CE Broker or CE Zoom. To do this, you will need to upload the CE Certificate of Completion to your CE Broker or CE Zoom account.

Why aren't these CE courses free?

  • To offer CE courses at no cost, we would need to have sponsors (i.e., manufacturers/companies pay for our expenses), and this event is completely non-sponsored. There are costs for putting on events like this; an IT team to ensure the event runs smoothly, speaker compensation, software costs, etc., all while being mindful money is tight for people right now. For those who had in-person events canceled and are unable to obtain live CE events, this is still much cheaper than what people had paid for the canceled in-person events.

Can the course presenters hear or see me?

  • No, the speakers can't see or hear you. You interact with them through a live chat.

Why is this event on a Friday?

  • Before we organize these live CE events, we've put out surveys. We base which courses are being offered on the feedback and the day of the week most people prefer. The majority stated they preferred a Friday or Saturday, so we hold events primarily on those days. Attendance is much higher on Fridays though, so we lean towards Fridays. Though we try, we simply can't please everyone.
