COURSE DETAILS

Description: Management of acute odontogenic pain is accomplished through a clinical approach that successfully incorporates both opioid and non-opioid analgesics. However, moderate to severe dental pain often occurs well after office hours and away from our immediate supervision. Thus, it is critical for clinicians to be able to accurately identify a patient's need for pain control, develop an individualized pain management plan, and assess the efficacy of analgesic agents employed. This program will provide an overview of strategies for effectively managing dental pain with opioid and non-opioid analgesics and analgesic adjuvants while also mitigating associated risks. Special emphasis will be given to appropriate practices for prescribing analgesics as well as identification and treatment of opioid analgesic abuse.

Objectives - Upon completion of this course, participants will:

  • Describe the pharmacology and mechanism of action of opioid and non-opioid analgesics;
  • Identify the intended roles of these analgesics in the treatment of acute dental pain, as well as situations which may preclude their use;
  • Discuss best practices for prescribing opioid analgesics as part of an individualized patient pain management plan;
  • Describe techniques useful in recognizing and identifying potential addiction as well as avoiding potential drug diversion;
  • Explain current protocols for the management and treatment of opioid addiction;
  • Discuss guidelines for proper storage and disposal of unused dosages.

Description: In January of 2019, I entered the Dominican Republic to participate in a dental mission with so much excitement, love, and eagerness to help care for the Dominican Peoples' healthcare needs. Sadly, my entire world was instantly changed when I witnessed human trafficking for the first time. Not being a crime in the Dominican Republic, it is often not a fear to have this horrendous crime hidden. Given an opportunity to spend time with survivors, I felt a new purpose that flooded my heart. Little did I know that trafficking was just as rampant in my own country and happening right before my eyes which fueled that passion even further. I just didn't understand how to look for it. You will, too, be halted and crushed to learn the prevalence in our country. In a survivor-focused survey, an astounding 87.8% of sex trafficking survivors saw a healthcare provider while being trafficked. Most were not identified as victims. Given this heartbreaking realization, this has set my heart and passion on fire to spread awareness in hopes of helping to end this horrific crime. We have to do better as healthcare providers. This presentation has been created by leading experts that are dedicated to being the generation to end human trafficking. Learn how you, as a healthcare provider, can be equipped to address this issue when your office is faced with this scary and heartbreaking situation.

Objectives - Upon completion of this course, participants will:

  • Understand different types of human trafficking and their local, statewide, and international prevalence;
  • Identify potential signs of human trafficking in victims who present for care in a medical setting;
  • Understand who should participate in a multidisciplinary care model for victim identification and recovery;
  • Discover immediate healthcare needs of identified victims;
  • Develop basic ability for trauma-informed response;
  • Learn about available resources for victim service aftercare.

Description: Often clinicians shy away from providing local anesthetics for their patients because they aren't confident in their skills, or patients aren't as anesthetized as they should be. This course is designed to empower clinicians to hit their best shot with a review of five injections (PSA, IO, AMSA, IA, GG) to achieve profound quadrant anesthesia. Participants will review the anatomy of the head and neck as it pertains to anesthesia, have a detailed review of injections with still photos and technique videos, review common causes for anesthesia failure, and gain a refresher on understanding anesthetic dose.

Objectives - Upon completion of this course, participants will:

  • Identify anatomical structures related to the PSA, IO, AMSA, IA, and GG injections;
  • Understand delivery technique for the PSA, IO, AMSA, IA, and GG injection;
  • Identify reasons for anesthesia failure;
  • Calculate the maximum recommended dose for anesthetics.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do these CEs meet the requirements for my state?

  • Today's RDH is an AGD PACE provider recognized by all 50 states (including California). According to AGD's guidelines, live, interactive, and streaming events are considered a live CE as long as Q & A is offered at the end of each course. This event will be streamed live by Today's RDH, and the speakers will be available for Q & A after their presentation. All CE certificates issued will state this is a live event.

    Your state's Dental Practice Act, which can be found on your state's Board of Dentistry/Board of Dental Examiners website, includes your allowable duties, CE requirements, and the rules pertaining to your state, etc. We highly encourage all dental healthcare professionals to check their state's Dental Practice Act often as rules, regulations, and CE requirements can change.

    TEXAS: The Human Trafficking course does NOT meet the requirements according to the Texas State Board of Examiners (see next FAQ below).

Why doesn't the Human Trafficking course meet Texas' requirements?

  • The Texas State Board of Examiners requires all dental healthcare professionals who provide direct patient care (dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants) to take human trafficking training as of September 1, 2020. Though the Texas State Board of Examiners approves CE courses that are AGD PACE-accredited, human trafficking courses are different for Texas. In Texas, training courses must be approved by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC). Though this course's speaker is accredited by HHSC through Unbound, it does not meet Texas' requirements, as Today's RDH is not currently an approved provider for the HHSC. Not being an approved provider for the HHSC is why it does not meet the Texas requirement. More information about the Texas human trafficking requirement can be found here: https://tsbde.texas.gov/new-human-trafficking-prevention-training-required/

Are these CE courses considered "live" or "in-classroom?"

  • Yes, these courses are considered "live" and "in-classroom" and are recognized as such by AGD PACE because the presenters are presenting live (not pre-recorded) and will be available to answer questions from participants during and after their course presentation (i.e., "interacting with the presenter"). The certificate of completion (CE certificate) will state it was a live course.

Are these courses considered "clinical" or "core" classes?

  • To figure out if the courses are clinical or core, you need to check your specific state's Dental Practice Act, which gives the requirements and what is accepted.

Is this going to be offered any other days besides the day listed?

  • This event (courses/speaker lineup) will be live-streamed during the scheduled date and times only. There are no plans for it to be available for replay, self-study, or on-demand.

When is your next live, virtual event going to be?

  • We plan each live, virtual CE event one at a time. Right now, we aren't organizing and planning our next event, so we don't know. However, if you'd like to be the first to know when we announce our next event, you can sign-up for our email list by going to todaysrdh.com and sign up in the box that says, "Get Today's RDH Sent Directly to Your Inbox." We also offer on-demand (not “live”) CE courses which can be found here: https://dentalce.todaysrdh.com/

When will I receive an email with links to each course to log on?

  • Once you register for the event, you will receive an email with instructions on how to get your links for each course. Be sure to check your SPAM folder. In order to properly track attendance for the event, each attendee will have unique links to log in to each course: one link per course, for a total of four links. Do not share your links with anybody, or you will not receive your CE Certificates of Completion for attending. If you share, and more than one person is logged on using your link, the tracking software to verify how long you were in attendance for each course won't work correctly.

    We highly recommend that you retrieve your links prior to the start of the event. If you have issues finding your links after the courses begin, you may not be logged on to the event early enough to receive CE credit because you must be logged on for at least one hour and 40 minutes per AGD PACE guidelines to receive credit.

What is the latest to sign-up?

  • The latest to sign-up is an hour before the event or when it sells out.

Are there breaks?

  • Yes, there will be 10-minute breaks between each course, and there will be a half-hour long lunch break in the middle of the event. Please see the agenda for the times.

Do I have to sit and watch the whole thing?

  • Just like if you went to a dental conference and took CE courses, yes, it would be in your best interest to pay attention the whole time. If there are certain courses you don't want credit for, you can step away at those times. There will be breaks in between the courses and a lunch break. Please keep in mind, you must be logged in to each two-hour course for a minimum of one hour and 40 minutes per AGD PACE guidelines to receive CE credit. The webinar software tracks your time in the event, and there will be no exceptions made to those who do not attend for the minimum amount of time.

What if I only want a couple of the courses being offered?

  • These courses are being sold as a package. If you prefer not to watch or take a certain course offered, you are free to step away during that time and come back for other courses during the day.

Will these courses be recorded and offered later?

  • Because this is a live event, it can only be watched at the time listed.

Are there test questions at the end of each course?

  • Unless your state requires a quiz/assessment to be taken at the completion of live CE courses, there will not be a quiz. For those states that do require a quiz, quizzes for each course will be made available.

How do I get my certificate/proof of completion? Will it be emailed?

  • You will receive your CE Certificate of Completion via email within 7 days after the event concludes. It is very important that you use the same email address to log in to each individual course as you use to register for the event. If you use different emails, there is no way to verify your attendance with your purchase. Please note, you must be logged on to each course for at least one hour and 40 minutes per AGD PACE guidelines to receive CE credit.

    We do recommend you create a SimpleCert account, which you will receive instructions on when the certificates are sent out. Once your attendance is verified, your CE certificates will be there, as well as emailed. If you do not receive your CE certificates or only receive some of them, CHECK YOUR SPAM BOX. Again, please give us 7 days to verify attendance before reaching out to support.

Are there refunds?

  • Full refunds (minus Eventbrite fees) will be available through May 14, 2021. Starting May 15, 2021, no refunds will be offered. Please make sure you can attend before purchasing and that you have a strong internet connection.

Are these courses only for hygienists, or can doctors and dental assistants receive CE too?

  • These courses can be taken by doctors, hygienists, and dental assistants for CE credit.

Can Canadians receive CE credit for these courses?

  • Canada recognizes CE Courses that have AGD PACE approved providers, so yes. However, we cannot guarantee, so we always recommend checking with your governing agency to confirm approval.

Can we sign-up as a group, or does everyone need to sign-up separately?

  • Each person who wants to receive CE credit needs to register and login into each course individually. This is because CE certificates are awarded based on comparing who purchased tickets and how long that person attended each course.

Is there a cap on the number of attendees?

  • There is a cap of 5,000 attendees.

What is the processing fee for?

  • The processing fee is an Eventbrite fee they charge for using their software.

Do I have to watch this on a laptop?

  • You can watch from any device with an internet connection or data, including laptops, desktops, tablets, or your smartphone.

What happens if I get disconnected?

  • Click on the course link again and log back in on the same device with the same name and email. If you get disconnected again, try using a different device like a cell phone, but please make sure you are using the same name and email to log in.

Are these CEs reported to CE Broker or CE Zoom?

  • Not directly. Just like an in-person conference, the certificate needs to be manually submitted to CE Broker or CE Zoom. To do this, you will need to upload the CE Certificate of Completion to your CE Broker or CE Zoom account.

Why aren't these CE courses free?

  • To offer CE courses at no cost, we would need to have sponsors (i.e., manufacturers/companies pay for our expenses), and this event is completely non-sponsored. There are costs for putting on events like this; an IT team to ensure the event runs smoothly, speaker compensation, software costs, etc., all while being mindful money is tight for people right now. For those who had in-person events canceled and are unable to obtain live CE events, this is still much cheaper than what people had paid for the canceled in-person events.

Can the course presenters hear or see me?

  • No, the speakers can't see or hear you. You interact with them through a live chat.

Why is this event on a Saturday?

  • Before we organize these live CE events, we've put out surveys. We base which courses are being offered on the feedback and the day of the week most people prefer. The majority stated they preferred a Friday or Saturday. Our last event was on a Friday (March 5, 2021), so we are holding this event on a Saturday (May 22, 2021). Though we try, we simply cannot please everyone.
